Park District offers ways to beat the heat for free

The Rockford Park District is offering free swimming at two of their locations. If you can’t resist the lure of a warm summer afternoon at the lake, Standfield Beach in Levings Park is open from 2 to 7 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays, through Aug. 12. Weekend hours at the beach are noon-7 p.m. The park is at 1420 S. Pierpont Ave., Rockford.

If the clear, cool water of a swimming pool is more your style, then you’ll want to be at Harkins Aquatic Center in Fairgrounds Park at 910 Acorn St., Rockford. The pool is open daily from noon until 5 p.m. through Aug. 12.

Both locations require children younger than 10 and those children who cannot swim be directly supervised by a swimming guardian age 16 or older. Lifeguards are on duty at the beach and at the pool during operating hours.

If you choose to go to the lake, you can also rent a paddleboat, play in the sand or have a picnic in the park. If you end up at the pool, you might want to go down their slide or play with some of their other water and spray toys. Either way, it is a great way to beat the summer heat for free, thanks to the Rockford Park District!
