Horse (of) Course Program for groups – School and youth groups/troops can learn about horse care, breeds and riding styles at Rockford Park District’s Lockwood Park & Trailside Equestrian Centre. The Horse (of) Course program is designed for children and adults in groups of eight to 20 who are interested in horses, but have limited knowledge. The two-hour course is currently available various weekdays through October (weather dependent), and includes one hour of classroom time and one hour in the saddle learning basic riding skills in the outdoor arena. Hayrides and Bonfires at Lockwood Park Groups, troops and organizations can enjoy old-fashioned outdoor fun on a 45-minute horse-drawn or tractor-drawn hayride through the scenic woods and meadows of Lockwood and Page parks, then relax and light a bonfire built by Lockwood Park staff. These activities can be scheduled through November (weather dependent), any day or evening. Shelter rental is also available. Trail Rides at Lockwood Park – Enjoy fresh air and nature’s scenery on a weekend horseback trail ride from Rockford Park District’s Lockwood Park! The 45-minute guided rides travel through the woods and meadows of Lockwood and Page parks on Saturdays and Sundays, departing Lockwood Park on the hour from noon until 4 p.m., weather permitting. Ride costs are: youth, $18 ($15 discounted resident rate); adult, $20 ($18 discounted resident rate); riders must be at least eight years old.
