Park District receives state boat access grant

The Rockford Park District has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Boat Access Development program to renovate an existing canoe launch/landing on the Kishwaukee River to better accommodate non-motorized boating.

The launch/landing site is on the south side of Atwood Park in New Milford and will be open to the public.

Renovation plans for the accessible zero-depth launch/landing include a parking area, accessible transfer stations, paved switchback entry path, and landscaping with native trees and grasses.

There was a total of nearly $750,000 in boat access grants awarded to nine projects throughout the state. Funds for this state-funded grant program are derived from revenues generated through taxes boaters pay on marine motor fuel purchases, and boat and canoe registration fees.

Judy Roby, grants coordinator for the Rockford Park District, said the project should be finished later this year.
