Peace conference planned

On the second anniversary of the Iraq invasion, Saturday, March 19, a regional peace conference themed “Reflections on the Second Anniversary of the Iraq Invasion: The Disillusionment of War” will be held.

The northern Illinois peace groups, Rockford Peace & Justice Action Committee, the Rockford chapter of Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom, and the Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement will host the conference at Rockford College, 5050 E. State St.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. in Fisher Chapel. A buffet lunch will be available in the cafeteria from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Cost is $5. The keynote will include two keynote presentations, both morning and afternoon. At 10 a.m., Lea Byron, veteran of the Iraq War, will give a presentation on her experiences. At 1 p.m., Ray Parrish, a military conscientious objection counselor with extensive experience in the area, will give a presentation on “Soldiers Who Refuse to Fight.”

A variety of human rights videos will be shown and will run concurrently with a series of workshops focusing on the following topics: spirituality and peacemaking, nonviolent organizing strategy and tactics including boycotts, civil disobedience, and guerrilla theater; draft law and conscientious objection; and strategies for exiting Iraq.

Finally, at 4:30 p.m., an anti-war march and rally will be held commencing at the Jane Addams International Peace Garden.
