Charged with kindness by a judge from St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, Petland stores nationwide, including the one in Rockford, raised more than $28,000 for the charity dedicated to finding cures for childhood cancer.
We are happy to be part of the Petland family, a company that embraces charitable work, said Dean Johnson, operator of the Petland store in Rockford.
More than 60 corporate employees of Petland, Inc. were arrested Jan. 16 and charged with kindness by a judge from St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital. To make bail, set at more than $21,000, the amount raised for St. Jude by Petland the previous year, operators of Petland stores nationwide were called for donations. Giving became the order of the day as Petland employees, their friends and business associates donated to St. Jude.
According to Debbie May, director of communications for Petland, Inc., the company kicks off every year with a fund-raiser for St. Jude, one of two national childrens charities at Petland. The company established Safari Stans Childrens Charities in 1994 to raise money for St. Jude via canister collections in its retail pet stores. Petland also fulfills pet-related wishes for terminally ill children nationwide through the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America.
