PGA Championship tees off at Medina

The world’s best golfers are in Illinois this week to compete in the 88th PGA Championship. The Medina Country Club is the host for the 2006 tournament, which tees off at 7 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 17.

Tiger Woods, last year’s defending PGA champion Phil Mickelson and U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy will all be paired together for the opening first two rounds. The trio is scheduled to tee off at 8:30 a.m., Thursday and then at 1:35 p.m., Friday, Aug. 18.

Joining Woods, Mickelson and Ogilvy from around the globe are Sergio Garcia from Spain, Colin Montgomerie from Scotland, Sweden’s Jesper Parnevik, Australia’s Stuart Appleby, Fiji’s Vijay Singh, Ernie Els and Nick Price from South Africa and Bernhard Langer from Germany.

Fans who want to cheer for a local favorite have four choices. Steve Stricker and Jeff Kelly are from Madison, Wis.; Jeff Sluman is from Hinsdale; and Mike Small is from Champaign.

Thursday and Friday action will be shown on TNT from 2 to 8 p.m. TNT will also air Saturday and Sunday’s play from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. CBS will cover the action Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. until the end of play.
