‘Pocket Circus’ headlines Latino showcase July 18

Sunday in the Park (Domingo en el Parque) continues its three-show series on Sunday, July 18, from 3 to 7 p.m. These free shows present the art and culture of Rockford’s Latino community, and are held in beautiful Levings Lake Park, at Montague Street and Johnston Avenue.

The program for July 18 features Pocket Circus Argentina, a duo that combines magical illusions with circus fun. These vibrant performers, who appear regularly at Navy Pier in Chicago, will perform in Spanish and English.

Also performing will be Destrampados. These four musicians have had many successful engagements in the Chicago area and locally, too, performing in the popular Banda and the New Beat (“duranguense”) styles.

Another highlight is the monthly talent show, offering an opportunity for contestants to gain experience and earn prizes, and provide entertainment for the whole family. Cash prizes are awarded in two age groups: 5-12, and 13-adult. The grand prize, awarded in August, is provided by Studio B.

Sunday in the Park is coordinated by local businessman Armando Cárdenas, well known as a member of the Mexican band, Cardenas III Generación. Performers should call Armando Cárdenas at (815) 282-4489 to enter the Talent Contest.

The Rockford Park District welcomes guests with disabilities. An assistive listening system is available for people who are hard of hearing. To reserve a personal receiver and headset, or for assistance and information on accessibility, call (815) 987-1600 (voice or TTY); 48-hour notice is required.

The next (and final) Sunday in the Park will be Aug. 15. For more information, please contact the Rockford Park District at 987-8800, or visit www.RockfordParkDistrict.org. Sunday in the Park benefits from assistance from the Rockford Area Arts Council and the Illinois Arts Council.
