A homeless man on the street selling

His pockets bulging with more life

Than my own.

We look at each other, nod and exchange smiles;

Each of us understanding, knowing and accepting

Responsibility for the other’s emotional well-being

Of being well and being kind;

Kind to our grins,

Kind to our eyes,

Kind to our moment together—

Passing each other’s

Transparent miracle,

Here—on this shadowed south-side street.
