Points West: Freeport Arts Center's gourmet fund-raiser Oct. 7

FREEPORT—Freeport Arts Center (FAC) will host its annual gourmet fund-raising dinner Saturday, Oct. 7. The evening will begin with wine and hors d’oeuvres at the home of Dr. William and Julie Dreibelbis, followed by dinner in the galleries of the Center.

“After visiting Greece this past summer, I was excited to try and create their festive atmosphere for our annual dinner,” said event chairman Janet Whiton. “We have a celebration menu planned with some traditional Greek foods with an American twist. Of course, traditional baklava and other sweets will accompany our dessert coffee buffet!”

When guests arrive at FAC, they will begin the festivities in the Antiquities Gallery, sipping an Acropolis cocktail, while viewing the Red-figure Amphora Greek Urn from the FAC collection. This urn is from the 5th to 4th century B.C. Guests will then be directed to their tables in the various galleries, and dine amid permanent collections and the current exhibition: Natural Expressions—an exhibit of three northwest Illinois artists.

Michelle Princer, chef/owner of Toni’s of Winnebago, will cater again this year. She has created a menu revolving around a main course of pork loin and couscous with a moussaka side and sauce. To begin, she has planned a country Greek salad with dolmas, Greek olives and feta cheese followed by an Athenian bean soup with a herb-crusted crouton. Of course, pita bread and Tzatziki sauce (cucumber yogurt sauce) will accompany the meal.

Based on last year’s tremendous success, FAC will again hold a raffle of special items. Local artists are donating their art to be used for this part of the evening.

Whiton said: “This year’s annual dinner will certainly have everyone raising their glasses and yelling ‘oopah’ (celebrate). The dress is black-tie optional, but togas are also a fitting choice.”

Proceeds from the event go to support the mission and activities of FAC. Reservations for the black-tie optional event are $90 per person. Of that total, 50 percent is a tax-deductible donation. Reservation deadline is Sept. 30, 2006.

FAC is at 121 N. Harlem Ave., and is open Tuesday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Wednesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Saturday-Sunday, noon-5 p.m. Tours may be scheduled by calling 235-9755. Admission to the Arts Center is free, although donations are accepted.
