Points West: Galena's Main Street celebrates Mardi Gras Feb. 16-18

GALENA—Enjoy a bit o’ Bourbon Street on Galena’s historic Main Street in February. Shiny beads, foot-stompin’ bands, finger-lickin’ food and drink specials and general carrying on are planned for the weekend of Friday-Sunday, Feb. 16-18, in Galena.

This three-day hootenanny, organized by the Galena Downtown Business Association, winds up with a pub-crawl at Boone’s Place at 4 p.m., Friday. Sinners and saints alike will zigzag their way up Main Street, sippin’ cocktails and tootin’ their horns until the boss blows the whistle and the crowd sashays on.

Costumes are encouraged and will be rewarded, with GDBA members tossing beads and masks to the crowd. Mardi Gras drinks and knee-slappin’ bands will be enjoyed at each pub until everyone winds up at Fried Green Tomatoes to close the night with Crawdaddy Kluesman from 9 to 11:30 p.m.

Saturday, select snow-carving teams will sculpt jaw-dropping art at Washington Park on Main Street, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Galena’s finest restaurants will put on a Cajun Food Contest Saturday afternoon, and come Saturday evening, they’ll whip up dinner and drink specials.

Peel your eyes open Sunday morning for the biggest, baddest Bloody Mary spreads this side of the Mississippi.
