Police warn about ‘Water Department’ scam

Police warn about ‘Water Department’ scam

The Rockford Police Department would like to inform the public about a recent scam that has been occurring in the Rockford area. Since early fall, several suspects have been identifying themselves as service employees representing lawn care business or the “Water Department.” This type of scam has been increasing in recent days.

The suspects work as a team to occupy the homeowners’ time while the other suspect searches the home for cash, jewelry or other valuables. Citizens should be suspicious of any unsolicited door-to-door offers or requests for service.

Citizens can avoid becoming victims of this scam by:

1. Insisting that the service employee provide proper photo identification.

2. Verifying the service call by contacting the department being represented.

Citizens can contact the Rockford Water Department at 961-3779 or Rock River Water Reclamation at 387-7400 to verify a call for service.

For further information, please contact Sgt. Michael Booker in the Rockford Police Department Community Services Unit at 987-5041.
