A pair of former winners decided the Illinois Womens State Amateur Golf Championship at Rockfords Aldeen Golf Club Friday when Kerry Postillion scored a 3-and-2 victory over Alexis Wooster.
Postillion, 40, of Burr Ridge, has won the state title four times in five career tries and is 18-1 all-time in State Am matches. Wooster of Winnetka had won two straight titles, including last year. The Tulane senior now is 11-1 in State Am matches.
Salley Wessels bid to win the crown ended in the quarterfinals. Wessels, 64, of Mount Morris, lost to Tulane University sophomore-to-be Mary Ellen Jacobs of Godfrey, 2-up. Wessels, 13-time Rockford Womens City champ, won the state amateur crown in 1977.
Jacobs, qualifying medalist with a four-under-par 68, lost to Postillion in the semifinals, 1-up in 21 holes. Wooster advanced with a 2-and-1 quarterfinal win over Northern Illinois sophomore Lisa Bailey and a 5-and-3 semifinal win over Kallie Harrison of Decatur.
Three local women qualified in the top 16 to reach the championship flight: Wessels shot 77, Chelsea Bach 79 and Samantha Makovec 81.
Bach, the 2002 State Junior Girls champ from Rockton Hononegah, was eliminated from match play by Wessels, 4 and 3. Makovec, Bachs former Hononegah teammate and the only three-time NIC-9 girls champion, was sent to the sidelines by Noriko Nakasaki, 4 and 3.
Area women who won flights were Dorothy Powell of Rockford, fifth flight; Irish Whalen of Hanover, second, and Char McLear of McHenry, first.
