Pranayama Yoga & One Drum
Pranayama Yoga Studio is bringing internationally renowned yoga instructor and author Donna Farhi to town for a three-day workshop, May 23-25. Farhi is on tour in the U.S. from her home in New Zealand. In conjunction with this weekend of in-depth yoga practice, One Drum world music ensemble will perform a special participatory concert at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 24. Both events take place at Camp Winnebago Branch of Rock River Valley YMCA (5700 N. Main St.).
The concert, Along Ancient Sonic Pathways, includes music that has been specifically created for the event. The ensemble will featue Rockfords David Stocker and other One Drum multi-instrumentalists Julio Pabon, Roman Edirisinghe, Jahmes Finlayson, Jeff Doc Green and Holly Haebig.
Presenting this concert in conjunction with the yoga workshop and Donna Farhis well-known body of work has given One Drum an opportunity to reach deep into the part of our repertoire that embraces spiritual, contemplative and trance music, said David Stocker. Our instrumentation will include conch shells, Chinese zither, berimbau, oud and didjeridoo, as well as other, more conventional instruments.
The audience is invited to explore the healing resonance of sound with hands-on drumming, call-and-response chanting, and an eclectic mix of instruments and traditions. By combining instruments of aboriginal origins with those of more contemporary roots, and with a blend of original and traditional compositions, One Drum delivers a fresh performance of musical ingenuity and creative talent.
Please bring a cushion for floor seating; limited chair seating is available.
Tickets for the concert are $15 and are available at Pranayama Yoga Studio, 514 E. State St., 968-YOGA; Rockford Area Arts Council, 713 E. State St., 963-6765; The Postal Shoppe, Edgebrook Center, 397-7301; and Tin Whistle, North Main & Auburn, 963-0270.
