Program to raise questions on casino gambling

Concerned Citizens for America and Rockford Urban Ministries (RUM), with its Enough Is Enough task force, will cosponsor a program on the problems caused by a gambling casino.

“The Economics of Gambling is a Gamble” will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 17, at Second Congregational Church, 318 N. Church St. The speaker will be Earl L. Grinols, professor of Economics from the University of Illinois, and author of the book Gambling in America: Costs & Benefits, published in 2002 by University of Illinois Press, as well as an article, “Assessing Casino Gambling’s Costs and Benefits.” Professor Grinols has a Ph.D. in economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a B.A. in mathematics and a B.S. in economics from the University of Minnesota.

Grinols has had numerous publications on the subject of economics and will relate this topic to the possibility of a Rockford casino and its effect on the local economy.

The two organizations (RUM & CCA) have formed a coalition along with area business and church leaders to bring in programs about the effects that gambling and a casino would have on Rockford.

This program is free and open to the public. For more information, call Rockford Urban Ministries at (815) 964-7111.
