Public used tire collection Sept. 29-30

Ogle County—A used tire collection will be Friday, Sept. 29 and Saturday, Sept. 30 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Winnebago County Highway Department, 424 N. Springfield Ave., Rockford. This event is free and open to the general public. Businesses, trucking companies or service stations are not eligible to participate.

The waste tire collection event, co-sponsored by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and Winnebago County, is designed to accept up to 1,000 waste tires per person. The tires must be counted and may be on or off the rims. Passenger car, truck and tractor tires will be accepted, but not large industrial off-road tires.

Before the tires are unloaded, participants must sign a Consensual Removal Agreement in which the participant agrees to not accumulate waste tires in the future. Participants should be prepared to help unload the tires they bring. The tires will be recycled or used as fuel.

This special collection day is a one-time opportunity to rid your home or property of unwanted waste tires. It should not be considered an ongoing tire disposal option. For more information, contact the IEPA at 987-7760.
