Ramblings from Reggie : Pack off to good start, enough about race, and time for O.J. to go away

When I approached the beginning of the NFL season, my thoughts were a 0-5 start with 2-3 being the best possible scenario for my Packers (yes, I own a share). 2-0 is a gift and much unexpected.

In the first game, Brett Favre looked like the old Favre, and threw four balls right into the Eagles’ hands. Fortunately, the defensive backs can’t catch.

During the Giants game, he looked like the old, old, old, Favre, almost like Mike Holmgren was strolling the sidelines again. My fear is the Packers will be good again this year, and he will want to stick around for a while. Rumors have Mike Holmgren stepping down as coach of the Seahawks, and coming back to Green Bay as team president.

My Yankees (I wish I owned stock) are only three back in the loss column from Boston. We are as close to catching the Red Sox as we are of getting caught by the Tigers. This is a great time of the year to be a sports fan. The Cubs and Brewers are battling to the end, the Cards fell off—can’t wait to see the finish.

Rockford Ald. Linda McNeely (D-13) standing on the city council floor and calling the Jefferson High School principal issue racism is an injustice to black and white people alike. He got caught up in some controversy, the teachers went after him, and his house wasn’t in order. It’s not a racist thing. Stop the nonsense, Linda.

The race card needs to be put away by both sides. It’s played too much. I just heard the O.J. Vegas burglary is racist. Give me a break! What an idiot he is.

Where’s the lawsuit from the taxpayers in the Harlem School District? Twenty percent raises are not acceptable. The board is supposed to be a steward of YOUR money. By the way, when are we going to see the Rockford teachers’ contract details?

Downtown is growing again, with more new businesses and another new restaurant. We keep growing and bringing more and more people downtown. It’s a beautiful thing.

Mayor Larry Morrissey (I) is wasting $425,000 for his “dream” center. Put it in the vacant City Hall lobby. Everyone seems to have that opinion. The mayor is doing a good job, and he and Police Chief Chet Epperson are taking their lumps. But they’ll work it out with the men in blue. Bottom line, they are all decent individuals who need to get on the same page.

Don’t forget Swilligan’s for any Big Ten game you can’t get on cable; we have the Big Ten Network. And, there’s plenty of room for you to bring your gang to watch any NFL game you want. We get all the games, and we serve food from 11 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Come on downtown. State Street to Jefferson to Church, hang a left. Remember, downtown is more than one block long!

Reggie Roberson is owner of Swilligan’s “The Pub,” 200 N. Church St.
