Ramblings from Reggie: Why isn’t Davis Park used every weekend?

Stars & Guitars—what a weekend! My thoughts all weekend were this: Why aren’t we using Davis Park every weekend?

The MetroCentre folks need to bring back Wing Ding, attract the Rockin’ Rib Fest from Machesney, pull down the Taste of Rockford from Loves Park and so on. The downtown businesses would greatly benefit from an overused—not underused—Davis Park.

Not to pick on guys taking advantage of the system, but we need to fix the system. Paul Logli and Dominic Iasparro are two examples of how taxpayers are being fleeced. One already moved and is drawing a pension plus a huge wage, and the other is getting ready to. Again, not singling them out—they did nothing wrong—but the system needs to be fixed. Whoever intended for these guys to be making $250,000-plus?

Oh, my God, the jail is too small already? Give me a break! We are letting drug dealers out of jail if they promise not to do it again. I think this may be a mask to not have to reduce the jail tax. I still think back to the public input phase of the jail project. The people said the jail was too big, so the powers-that-be reduced the bed count. The citizens were elated…see, we made a difference. Guess what, folks? The tax is still 1 percent. You missed the entire point.

Cubs/Sox last weekend, did anyone care?

If Michael Bloomberg enters the race for president, the Republicans are done. Wouldn’t it be ironic if another Clinton gets in because the Republicans split their vote? It happened for Bill twice with Perot. Bill Clinton was lucky Ross Perot was around. What did one cicada say to the other? Are you kidding me, Bush is still the president? I stole that joke from my brother Rick. If you know Rick, he usually presents a couple of “groaners” a day, whether you want to hear them or not.

Are you tired of the big-box east-side bars and the chain restaurants? How about a little something different for a change? Downtown, just like the song…it’s all downtown.

Bring your Winnebagos, buses, bikes, motorcycles, scooters, kids, grandma and everybody, and have fun downtown this summer. Maria’s, Swilligan’s, Chestnut Street Grille, The Adriatic, Paragon On State, King’s Table, Octane, Serrano’s Mexican Kitchen, and Krypto are all waiting for you on the west side of the river. Come over the bridges, and check out these fine establishments. We’ll be here for ya!

Self-promotion moment! Don’t forget to bring your gang down to Swilligan’s The Pub for all the NFL games this fall on DirecTV in HD. We get all the games, so gather your group and, remember, $1.75 domestic bottles every Sunday through Tuesday.

Reggie Roberson is owner of Swilligan’s “The Pub,” 200 N. Church St.
