Rampage soccer team plays preseason game in Indiana

Hardcore local soccer fans can catch the Rockford Rampage in a preseason game against the Major Indoor Soccer League’s Detroit Ignition this Saturday, Oct. 13. The good news is admission to the game is free. The bad news is the game will be played in Fort Wayne, Ind.

OK, so you still want to go. Fort Wayne is about 245 miles from Rockford. The game starts at noon. That means you’ll have to be on the road by about 7 a.m. That’s why you’re hardcore.

Oscar Albuquerque, Rockford Rampage president, said: “Fort Wayne is a great soccer market and would make a fine addition to the American Indoor Soccer League (AISL). This game will be a great exhibition for the fans.”

The AISL has teams in Cincinnati, Rockford, Springfield, Mo., Tulsa, Okla., and Waukegan. The league will be starting its fifth anniversary season in November.

This pre-season exhibition game will bring in the two finalists in their respective league’s championship games. The Ignition finished in first place in the MISL with an 18-12 record. They ended up losing in the championship game to the Philadelphia KiXX 13-8 last April.

The Rockford Rampage, formerly known as the Thunder, lost to the Massachusetts Twisters 11-5 in the AISL championship game.

The game will be played at The Plex Sports Center at 1807 E. California Road. For more information, call The Plex at (260) 496-9999.

Frequent readers of my columns know I’m not a soccer fan. I wouldn’t get up at 7 a.m. to watch soccer if it were being played in my own back yard. That’s just me. I hope everyone who goes has a very safe trip. Let us know who wins!
