For the second consecutive year, Philip Soosloff, Rockford College associate professor of art and Rockford College Art Gallery director, will exhibit and sell his works at the International Exposition of Sculpture Objects & Functional Art (SOFA). This prestigious show is held annually in New York and at Navy Pier in Chicago. In his Chicago debut exhibit last year, Soosloff sold nine of his 11 pieces priced between $2,500 and $5,000, a feat almost unheard of for an unknown art dealer, said Jeffrey Kraft of Kraft Lieberman Galleries in Chicago.
But it is not the money that motivates the artist. Soosloff says of his passion for three-dimensional art: If I was making things to sell, I could sculpt Wrigley Field. But I teach to make a living, and that gives me artistic freedom.
The event will be held at Navy Pier in Chicago from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Nov. 5-6, and from noon to 6 p.m., Nov. 7. General admission is $12, three-day passes are $20, and tickets for students, seniors and groups are $10. For tickets, call SOFA at (800) 563-7632 or (773) 506-8860. For more information, call the Rockford College box office at (815) 226-4100.
