R.E.A.C.H.: District 205 errs in map

R.E.A.CH. Chair Barb Dent spoke at the District 205 board meeting Tuesday night to inform citizens that the Rockford School District has erred in drawing the new boundaries for the sub-districts. This error means the school board majority MUST rescind their vote and allow ALL seven sub-district seats to be up for election in April 2003. The school board will have to draw lots to see which three subdistricts will serve a two-year term and which four sub-districts will serve a four-year term.

In late August, the school board majority voted to ask a judge to allow Nancy Kalchbrenner and Jay Nellis to remain in their seats beyond their term despite the fact that the district needed to redistrict. Redistricting was necessary because of population growth in Kalchbrenner and Nellis’s sub-districts. The district has not aggressively pursued a decision from the court to grant their illegal request. That means that as of October 23, residents from ALL seven sub-districts can begin to collect signatures to place their names on the April ballot.
