River District’s third annual series features walk along river

The River District Association’s third annual series of Historical Walk-Abouts continues Saturday, May 21 with a focus “On the Waterfront.”

The outdoor walking tours are free and open to the public. Rockford has more than 150 years of history, and individuals are invited to join a volunteer guide to discover the rich architectural and historical legacy of Rockford’s downtown River District. Those who attend will see the beautiful urban landscape with the gorgeous Rock River, and the exterior of businesses, shops, restaurants, residences, churches, theaters, and parks.

Over the years, the waterfront has changed, yet it remains the centerpiece of the River District. Today, buildings on the river house marinas, offices, storefronts, and living spaces. Participants will be treated to an inside peek of Rockford Associates’ offices on North Madison. Downtown’s waterfront is a place where Rockford works and plays.

Start time is 10 a.m. and the walk will last about two hours. Those interested in attending are advised to arrive a few minutes early.

Meeting location is West State and North Main streets, north of the mall parking. Free parking is available on the street, and in nearby surface lots and parking decks.

Other Historical Walk-About dates include June 18, July 16, Aug. 20, Sept. 17, and Oct. 22.
