Recycle Center open Memorial Day weekend

LOVES PARK—If you don’t have curbside pickup of recyclable materials, where can you tak them? The only place in northern Illinois where they can go is Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful’s Recycling Center in Roscoe. Volunteer staffed, the Recycle Center is open Saturdays year-round, including this Memorial Day weekend.

The total number of recycled materials for the past year is impressive: 83 tons of paper, 17 tons of cardboard and 27 tons of commingled materials (glass, plastics and metals). To put it in practical terms, 82 tons of paper is equivalent to more than 270 cubic yards of landfill space and nearly 1,400 trees. That’s a real savings of our natural resources, all thanks to recycling!

Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful has sponsored the Recycling Center for more than 15 years. Located in the Waste Management parking lot on the frontage road (past McCurry Road and Route 251) in Roscoe, the Recycle Center is open year-round on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until noon and is volunteer operated. There is no charge for area residents to drop off recyclable materials; however, donations are appreciated.

Items accepted at the Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful Recycling Center include:

Glass containers (food jars and bottles only—green, brown and clear);

Plastic containers (coded No. 2—all; No. 1—water, soda and clear liquor bottles only; six-pack rings);

Laser/ink jet cartridges;

Metal cans (food cans only with labels removed);

Aluminum (cans, aluminum scrap, foil, pie tins, etc.);

Corrugated cardboard; and

Paper (newspapers, slicks, inserts, phonebooks, junk mail, paper bags, office paper, computer paper, chipboard, magazines).
