Regular TV ads canceled for election?

One local retailer claims the three major local television stations will be bumping off his commercials because of the enormous number of political ads in the next week.

WREX (13) General Manager John Chadwick declined to comment on whether any regular spots will be taken out for political ads.

“On a regular basis, spots are pre-empted in this market,” he said. “I think it just has to do with the rate they sell for some reason. The market routinely oversells a little bit.”

He said rates for all ads vary, and political ads aren’t necessarily more costly than others. He said the stations can sell pre-emptable spots or fixed spots for any type of advertising. Buying a fixed spot ensures that one ad can’t replace another.

WTVO (17) representatives declined to comment.

WIFR (23) General Sales Manager Brian Couch said he doesn’t know whether his station will pre-empt ads.
