Reiki: “rei” meaning divine and “ki” meaning life energy. Reiki, derived from Japan, is a natural healing technique that utilizes the universal life force or energy. Here in the west, reiki is best described as “spiritually guided life force energy” that is channeled from the divine source through the reiki practitioner and given to the client by laying on of hands using many different hand placements for specific conditions that the client may be experiencing. Each position is held for several minutes, and an entire treatment can last anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes, depending on the type of treatment given. There are quick treatments, reiki boosts, chair treatments, table treatments and distant healing treatments to choose from.

A reiki treatment creates a radiance that is extremely deeply relaxing for the client, and very often the client will feel a sensation of warmth or actual heat radiating from the hands of the practitioner. Reiki is extremely healing on all levels–spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically. Reiki is both powerful and gentle and is quite effective in healing acute and chronic illnesses and diseases. Reiki can also be used to alleviate stress and overcome undesirable habits.

It must be noted that the reiki practitioner is not the source of the healing energy, God is. The practitioner is the vessel that the energy flows through just as electrical power flows through a conduit. A reiki treatment is somewhat like a gardener using a hose to water the garden. The practitioner (the hose) can direct the flow of the energy (the water) to heal the client (hydrate the plants). If there is an area of the body that needs more attention, the practitioner can focus and direct more healing energy to that specfic area, just as the gardener can direct more water to a dehydrated plant. Because it is channeled energy, the practitioner is not depleted of his or her own energy when giving a healing session.

A Reiki master-teacher, such as myself, has the ability to attune others with the reiki energy. This is accomplished through reiki classes and attunements given in three separate levels. The master-teacher guides the students through a process of opening and clearing the seven major chakras or energy centers in the body prior to the ceremonial attunement (at-one-ment). The attunement ceremony is an uplifting and spiritual gift that requires a commitment that must be carefully considered by the reiki student prior to the attunement, as it is a gift of empowerment, balance and harmony that leads one through a journey of personal growth on the spiritual, emotional, mental and physical levels.

It is the responsibility of the reiki practitioner or healer to be committed to and live by the reiki principles handed down from Master Mikao Usui, which are as follows:

Just for today, do not anger.

Just for today, do not worry.

Honor your parents, teachers and elders.

Earn your living honestly.

Show gratitude to every living thing.

After completing each level, the student will earn a certificate and, upon achieving Reiki Master at level three, the student will be honored with his/her own reiki lineage which transcends back to Master Mikoa Usui, who rediscovered the ancient healing gift after 2,500 years. The complete history of reiki is taught in class.

The levels of reiki are like that of a three-way light bulb. At each level and attunement, the students’ vibratory rate is heightened and increased, and by level three, the students are then able to tap into the source of “All That Is” at a much higher vibration. It is not, however, necessary to wait in using reiki until you achieve level three. You are very much connected to the source at level one. You do increase your connection as you proceed into level two, and at level three, the energy connection is amazing.

One does not need to become a reiki practitioner to experience the magnitude of the gifts received by becoming a reiki healer. Anyone who is prepared for and committed to the gift of reiki can be attuned and can use the healing energy for their loved ones, for self-healing, pets or wild animals, plants, food, events, places, planetary well-being and for clearing negative energies or issues in your life, using hands-on and distant-healing techniques.

It is time that we realize and utilize all of the gifts with which God has blessed each and every soul on this planet. Remember his magnificent Son, who said, “Greater things than I, shall ye do.” Embrace the notion that who you really are…your soul-self…is a healer. YOU have come to this world to offer your gifts and to uplift others…why wait? Begin your journey toward DISCOVERING WELLNESS.
