Rockford School District officials will honor three teachers and three students whose heroic efforts Dec. 19 saved the life of Justin Falzone when he nearly drowned in the Jefferson High School pool.
Falzone, who is captain of the J-Hawks swim team, was pulled from the bottom of the pool and resuscitated after he tried unsuccessfully to swim two lengths under water without coming up for air. The rescue occurred during physical education class at the end of the school day.
Superintendent Dr. Dennis Thompson and Rockford School Board President Nancy Kalchbrenner will present the teachers and students with certificates of merit Jan. 9. The recognition will take place during the School Board meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. in Room 207 of the Administration Building, 201 S. Madison St.
Those who assisted in the rescue are physical education teacher Gordy Kasper, teacher and coach Michael Brackett, and student and swim team member Michael Paul.
Teacher Kami Chester and two other students also participated in the rescue.
These teachers and students thought clearly, acted quickly, and did all the right things to avert what might have been a very tragic event, said Dr. Thompson.
