Rockford, IL –River District Association is working with the City of Rockford and the Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau on the Holiday Lights and Decorations project for Rockford’s downtown River District neighborhood. This year the District has committed to raising $2500 to help pay for a portion of the $10,000 cost.

Because this is an issue of community pride an appeal for donations is being made to businesses and residents throughout the Rockford area to help support this effort. One of the ways businesses can help is to contribute cash to the River District Holiday Lights fund. If 25 businesses or individuals gave $100 each, this year’s goal would be quickly met (although, no donation is too small or too large). All those who contribute will be recognized at River District’s Annual Meeting in January.

Sparkling white lights will be placed on trees and green roping will be put on light poles along State Street and the Main Street Mall. Admittedly, this does not cover the entire River District area, but it does hit one of the major thoroughfares through the District and promotes the celebratory feeling of the season.

River District will continue to collect money and coordinate this effort in future years. As more money is collected, more streets will be added. In the past, funds for these decorations have come from a Special Service Area tax that no longer exists. Therefore, it is up to the community to work together to accomplish the task of decorating for the holidays.

Another way for businesses to show the spirit of the season is to decorate their storefront and property and to change their building’s floodlights from white to red and/or green. And, by all means, BE CREATIVE! These ideas are intended to inspire additional thought.

Donations in any amount may be sent to River District Holiday Lights, 127 N. Wyman St., Rockford, Illinois, 61101. For more information contact Kim Wheeler, 964-6221.

River District’s mission is to create a growing, thriving, prosperous downtown neighborhood. Programs like this generate interest and increase activity in the District.
