River safety improved
River Mile Markers will be installed by local fire departments at 1/4 mile intervals beginning May 30 along the Pecatonica, Kishwaukee, South Kishwaukee, Rock and Sugar rivers. Oscar Presley, Harlem-Roscoe fire chief, is spearheading the installation phase. The mile marker signs, as recommended by the U.S. Coast Guard, are black on white signs the size of 10 inches by 36 inches and will also include a letter indicating the river on which they are located. The river markers will be used for identifying river locations for emergency situations and identifying navigational concerns/hazards for such operations as river rescue and regulating boating traffic.
