Robberies force change at Heritage Credit Union

By Joe Baker, Senior Editor

Heritage Credit Union, 634 N. Church St., has changed its hours and method of operation, according to Robert Lestina, CEO of the company.

The changeover was effective Sept. 3rd. The offices are an express branch instead of a main facility, Lestina said. The lobby is locked and only drive-up service is available.

Lestina said the reason for the change is that the office has experienced five armed robberies in the past five years, two of them in the past eight months.

He said the risk to the lives of staff and customers is too great to continue the former open offices style of doing business. He urged customers to utilize the company’s main office at 5959 E. State St.

Lestina noted the State Street facility has three drive-up lanes and will be adding an ATM. He said some staff members will remain at the Church Street office to serve customers there while others were transferred to State Street.

“I can assure you,” he said, “that Heritage Credit Union is committed as ever to provide you with high quality services—as we have done since 1934. While I regret the inconvenience this action may cause many of you, I ask for your patience and understanding regarding this decision. The risk to people’s lives is just too great to operate as we have been doing.”

The Church Street drive-up is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Friday hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. til noon.
