Rock River Times nominated for Mayor’s Arts Award

For the fourth straight year, The Rock River Times has been nominated for the Mayor’s Arts Award in the corporation category.

The Rock River Times has been a strong proponent of the area arts scene since its first issue in the early 1990s. The paper features columns, articles and reviews of local art shows, museums, concerts, theater, and other events and prides itself on promoting the Rockford area arts scene. The Rock River Times has recently extended its arts coverage to a full pullout section, “Vibe Entertainment,” and also offers a monthly music special, featuring the monthly musician’s directory and other columns and features.

The City of Rockford and the Rockford Area Arts Council created the Mayor’s Arts Awards in 1989 to give artists and arts advocates recognition for their accomplishments.

“We believe that the title of the 2003 Mayor’s Arts Awards conveys our pride in what is accomplished through the arts: ‘Celebrating the Heart and Soul of Our Community.’ Certainly the arts are just that!” wrote Susan Whitcher, Mayor’s Arts Awards chairman, and Susan Williams, Rockford Area Arts Council, in a May 5 nomination letter.

The Mayor’s Arts Awards celebration will be June 18 at the Coronado Theatre and is hosted by Rockford Mayor Doug Scott.Tony Award winning playwright and screenwriter David Henry Hwang will be the guest speaker. Information: 963-6765.
