Rockford Art Museum hosts HE & SHE: Vallien and Hydman-Vallien, showcasing the work of internationally-acclaimed glass artists Bertil Vallien and Ulrica Hydman-Vallien in a joint exhibition running March 30-July 8. The exhibit, with more than 125 pieces, marks the first and only combined exhibition of this magnitude in North America for the couple.
Rockford Art Museum has the unique opportunity to simultaneously showcase the Valliens and their different interpretations, expressions and ideas, despite sharing an interest in glass and having a personal relationship, said Linda Dennis, executive director of the Rockford Art Museum.
Featured in the museums Funderburg and Kuller galleries, the massive 10,000-square-foot exhibition encompasses Bertils series of glass boats, maps and heads, and Ulricas work in glass and two-dimensional media. Special to this exhibit is a portion of Bertils Karolina installation, inspired by an old Swedish tale about a schoolgirl, Karolina. Ulricas work, which can be seen around the world on the tails of British Airways planes, on linen bed sets, and on Ericsson mobile phones, is showcased here through standard-setting pieces such as Snakeflowers, gold-painted vases, eggs and nests, incredible textiles, and highly-recognizable paintings. Guest curators are Barbro and Börge Kamras of VIDA Museum, Sweden.
