Once again this spring, Rockford Blacktop Construction Company will provide free sand for children’s sandboxes for one day only, Saturday, May 5, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., at its North Shore Sand & Gravel location, North Second Street at Swanson Road in Machesney Park.

This is the 31st year that Rockford Blacktop has provided free sand—the event has become a tradition in the Stateline as part of “spring.” Troy Kutz, quarry vice president, explained that the company receives numerous requests for sand to use in children’s sandboxes, and this method is a safe and efficient way to provide a community service.

“It’s something we are very pleased to be able to do for area families. We also appreciate that our employees come out that day to donate their time to help at the event. Last year, people hauled away over 500 tons of sand. We ask that you bring your own containers,” Kutz said. “In our 31 years of providing sand, we have given out over 25,000 tons.”
