Rockford Blacktop offers free sand

Rockford Blacktop will provide free sand for children’s sandboxes for one day only, Saturday, May 1, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at North Shore Sand & Gravel, North Second Street at Swanson Road in Machesney Park.

The event has become a tradition in the stateline as part of spring. According to Troy Kutz, quarry manager, the company receives numerous requests for sand for children’s sandboxes, and this method is a safe and efficient way to provide a community service.

“It’s something we are very pleased to be able to do for area families,” Kutz said. “We also appreciate that our employees come out that day to donate their time to help at the event. Last year, people hauled away over 400 tons of sand. We ask that you bring your own containers. In our 28 years of providing sand, we have given out over 23,500 tons.”
