Rockford College celebrates culture of Argentina

The Rockford College Spanish Club will present “Fiesta Argentina,” featuring the Eduardo Tami Trio of Buenos Aires, sponsored by the Rockford College Entertainment Council, at 5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 27 in the Clark Arts Center Lobby and Maddox Theatre at Rockford College.

Fiesta Argentina will highlight the music, dance and culture of Argentina. The event is open to the public. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the Rockford College box office, 815-226-4100. Profits from the event will support the Rockford College Spanish Club’s community service programs. Clark Arts Center is accessible.

The event features the Eduardo Tami Trio’s first and only show in the Rockford area this year. Inspired by their homeland, the Trio’s music is a fusion of tango and jazz: classic, modern and passionate. Concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

The lobby of Clark Arts Center will feature multimedia exhibits produced by Rockford College students of Argentina’s history, culture and travel. Rockford businesses like Espejo, a weekly Rockford Spanish language newspaper, will have giveaways. Tienda Bendecidos, in CherryVale Mall, will sell jerseys and memorabilia of Argentina’s celebrated soccer heroes.

Spanish Club will sell Argentina-style refreshments at the Fiesta, including authentic empanadas, fist-sized hot pockets of dough filled with meat, cheese or vegetables—a typical snack found in Argentinean cafés. The national beverage of Argentina will be served, Maté, a caffeinated tea, a staple of any Argentinean’s day. Soft drinks and coffee will also be available.

A tango dance workshop will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Dance Studio at Clark Arts Center. The event is for beginners, and all ages are welcome. The class will be taught by internationally-renowned tango dancers Jacques St-Cyr and Maria Costello. Separate admission for the class is $5.

50/50 cash raffle

The Multicultural Club will be selling tickets to support the survivors of Hurricane Katrina, and will draw the winner on stage just before the concert. Tickets are $1 each, and six tickets for $5.
