Rockford College welcomes two new coaches

Two new head coaches will be calling Rockford College home for the upcoming 2006-07 season. The school recently hired a new head coach for both women’s basketball and men’s baseball.

Bob Koopman will be the new skipper for the Regents baseball team. He was most recently the head coach at Ashford University in Clifton, Iowa, and he has spent the last five years with the Rockford RiverHawks. He was the manager in 2004 when the RiverHawks won the Frontier League Championship. Koopman’s résumé also includes a seven-year stint as head baseball coach at Illinois Valley Community College.

Prior to his coaching career, Koopman earned All-American honors at Harper Junior College and played three years in the Pittsburgh Pirates minor league system.

Aaron Nester will become the 10th head coach in the 24-year history of the women’s basketball program at Rockford College. He takes over for former head coach Bob Amsberry. Nester served as an assistant to Amsberry for the last four years, and graduated from Rockford College in 2004 with a degree in sports management.

The women’s program is looking to continue, and build on, some recent success. The team is returning seven letter winners, including two starters, from last year’s 21-7 team. Returning 2005 All-Conference forward Angela Butler is expected to lead this year’s squad.

“It’s an honor to be the head coach at Rockford College, my alma mater,” Nester said. “Over the past four years, we’ve developed a great program and tradition. I look forward to continuing the program’s path to success, both athletically and academically.”
