Rockford Jazz Society presents Ken Jarczyk and Friends

The Rockford Jazz Society is pleased to present the Ken Jarczyk and Friends Quintet, who will perform from 3 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 9, at the Mendelssohn Club, 415 N. Church St., Rockford.

The Quintet draws its repertoire from the entire spectrum of modern progressive jazz music. Whether it is hard-bop to contemporary smooth, the group delivers swinging quality.

The Society meetings are at the Mendelssohn Club, and there is a $5 charge for members, $7 for non-members.

The Quintet has Ken Jarczyk on the saxes, Bob Devita on the traps, Don Linke on the bass, Chris Behrens on the keys, and special guest Randy Schneeberger on the trumpet.

Ken Jarczyk’s history is long, everything from Chicago blues halls to jazz clubs in Chicago, Boston, New York and Los Angeles. Add an international tour, a lot of diesel-bus fumes with Miller, Elgart, Dorsey(s), and many “hired-gun” jobs, and you have an idea of Jarcyzk’s scope. He is known for his “take-no-prisoners” approach to jazz. Don’t forget his latest exploits as music director of the Madison Jazz Orchestra.

Bob Devita is the most decorated drummer in this area. Many RAMI awards attest to his prowess on the traps. Devita maintains a very busy schedule whether performing or teaching.

Don Linke is on the “top call” list in Milwaukee. You will understand why when you hear him. Ken and the gang call him “the Amazing Dead-Man!”

Chris Behrens runs an outstanding jazz education program. His work in the Beloit school system should get him major attention. He is responsible for bringing some of the most famous artists into the Beloit schools for clinics and one-on-one teaching with his kids. Behrens is also a talented pianist.

Randy Schneeberger is well known in the area as a power-jazz player. His technique is fabulous, and his ideas flow freely and beautifully. His history is similar to Jarczyk’s, but as Ken says, “We toured on different bands together!”

Don’t miss an afternoon of the finest in live jazz music. For tickets or more information, call the Rockford Jazz Society, 226-8844. Ken Jarczyk Jazz Groups may be reached at 964-8903.
