Rockford Lutheran Choral Union presents ‘The Messiah’

Local soloists, a new director and a shortened version of Handel’s “The Messiah” will make these Thanksgiving weekend performances special this year.

Rockford Lutheran Choral Union will present the under two-hour program at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 30, and at 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 1, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 200 N. First St., Rockford. A freewill offering will be received at each performance.

For this 57th annual presentation of the beloved oratorio, Nat Bauer will make his debut as conductor of the 100-plus voice chorus, soloists and a chamber orchestra. Bauer has had extensive choral experience, particularly in the Belvidere area.

Soloists are Cathy Herdeman, soprano; Cynthia Gaffney, alto; Dennis Johnson, tenor; and Larry Runestad, bass. June Taylor is organist and rehearsal pianist, and Kay Hotchkiss is harpsichordist. Rachel Handlin is concertmistress and orchestra coordinator.

Admission tickets are free. They may be obtained at Trinity Lutheran Church, Canterbury Books, Bible Book Center and Karnes Music.
