Rockford named ‘Arts Friendly Community’

Rockford is one of 18 communities named as the first recipients of the Illinois Arts Friendly Community Awards. The top award went to Schaumburg, and the award in the small community category went to Fairfield. Rockford received an honorable mention award. The Illinois Arts Friendly Community Awards highlight municipal support of the arts by honoring municipal leaders who are using the arts to build healthy communities. The awards are being presented by the Illinois Municipal League and the Illinois Arts Alliance Foundation. “This award is a wonderful tribute to the work being done by the Rockford Area Arts Council to promote the arts in all segments of our community,” said Mayor Doug Scott. “The award tells us something we already knew, that Rockford has a very strong arts community coupled with outstanding support from local government,” said Susan Williams, executive director of the Rockford Area Arts Council. In its comments, the Illinois Municipal League and the Arts Alliance Foundation noted the City of Rockford’s involvement in the restoration of the historic Coronado Theatre and the Arts Council’s support of programs in underserved segments of the community, including the ArtsPlace job training program for at-risk teens.
