Rockford Progressive Meetup (DFA/PDA) fights to protect Social Security

Local group urges Congressman Manzullo to reject the President’s plan

On April 14, members of Rockford Progressive Meetup group delivered a letter from its members requesting Rep. Don Manzullo to reject President Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security. Social Security has had impact on the lives of local citizens, and the Meetup group wanted to be sure Rep. Manzullo was aware of this impact.

“America’s Social Security plan has been one of the most successful democratic programs in our country’s history,” said Holly Johnson, head of the Rockford Progressive Meetup. “Social Security has been a safety net for millions of Americans, and we think that Congressman Don Manzullo should be aware of the views of his constituents.”

In an effort to protect this critical institution from destruction, and guarantee a dignified retirement for all—Democracy for America (DFA), TrueMajorityACTION and local Meetup groups across the country have started a campaign to gather stories from local citizens highlighting the impact that Social Security has had on their lives. Throughout the month of April, members from these groups have been meeting with their local and state representatives to voice their opposition to the President’s privatization plan.
