Rockford Rage roller derby exhibition Dec. 3

If football isn’t your sport, but you still yearn for some hitting and contact on the weekends, maybe the Rockford Rage is what you’re looking for. The Rage is a group of local females who have put together Rockford’s first-ever roller derby team. They are preparing for their inaugural season, which starts in February 2007.

To help them with their preparation, three established teams will be in Rockford this Sunday afternoon, Dec. 3, for an exhibition bout. The Screw City Slammers, Demolition Dolls and the Midwest Maulers will join the Rage to battle it out at the Indoor Sports Center, 8800 E. Riverside Blvd., Loves Park.

Doors will open at 2 p.m. Advance adult tickets are $10. Tickets purchased at the door will be $12. According to the Rage’s press release, the event is considered PG-13, but ironically they do offer youth tickets (12 and younger) for $4. A portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to local charities.

Rockford is looking to join nearly 100 teams competing in the 2-year-old Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. Since spring of 2006, the Rage has grown from a handful of skaters to nearly 50. They range in age from 21 to 48, and include stay-at-home mothers, teachers, nurses and paramedics.
