Rockford Symphony Orchestra to open 2002-03 season

The Rockford Symphony Orchestra invites you to its 68th season of Summer, Classics, Pops and Gala concerts. From Beethoven to Jodi Benson, Puccini to the Hometown Pops, the RSO’s 2002-2003 season is guaranteed to transport listeners to new worlds with music that will enchant the ear and enrich the soul.

“It’s an incredibly exciting year for us, musically,” said RSO Music Director Steven Larsen. “We have some very interesting collaborations planned, including a new summer concert with a patriotic theme that we’ll perform at Rock Valley College. The RSO will be partnering again this year with the Mendelssohn Chorale on a very dramatic piece, the Brahms Requiem. And, of course, our biggest innovation for the 2002-2003 season will be bringing a fully staged opera to Rockford.”

For the first time in the Coronado Theatre’s 75-year history, the thrilling sights and sounds of grand opera will fill Rockford’s “Wonder Theatre.” In an historic partnership, the RSO and Opera Illinois will present Puccini’s Madama Butterfly for the Season Opening Gala Concert. This heartbreaking masterpiece will feature internationally renowned opera singers, breathtaking costumes and sets, and the stunning sounds of the RSO. Sung in the original Italian with projected English subtitles, this single performance is certain to sell out.

Featured guest artists throughout the remainder of the season include: Disney songstress and Rockford native Jodi Benson; Van Cliburn competition Silver Medalist, pianist Antonio Pompa-Baldi; internationally renowned violinist Lee Chin, and in a return engagement with the Rockford Symphony, pianist Lor Sims. The RSO will also feature local performing artists in a “Hometown Pops” concert, with vocalists Jerry & Kathy Stevens and Dorothy Paige-Turner as well as pianists Carl Cole and Joel Ross.

Subscription packages go on sale March 25, ranging in price from $18- $299.
