Rockford Symphony presents ‘German Requiem’ Nov. 23

Music Director Steven Larsen and the Rockford Symphony Orchestra bring Brahms’ stunning “German Requiem” to the Coronado Stage at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23. This epic mass for the dead, featuring more than 100 voices of the Mendelssohn Chorale, is a spiritual and musical masterpiece, not to be missed. In addition to the Chorale, directed by Marti Bein, the concert will feature African-American soloists Jonita Lattimore and Philip Lima performing one of the most beloved choral works ever written.

Commenting on the power of this performance, RSO Maestro Steven Larsen recently said, “The ‘German Requiem’ stirs deep, profound emotions in both its performers and its audiences. It is Brahms’ largest work; it took 11 years to compose. One of the most exceptional parts of the piece is its focus on the message of comfort to all humanity. This is the work that made Brahms famous as a composer.”

Joining the RSO and the Mendelssohn Chorale for this monumental performance of Brahms’ “Requiem” are soprano Jonita Lattimore and baritone Philip Lima.

Chicago native Jonita Lattimore makes her career in opera, symphonic works and as a recitalist. She has performed to critical acclaim with the Tulsa Opera, Blue Lake Fine Arts Festival, Lyric Opera, Houston Grand Opera, the Pine Mountain Music Festival, the Bastille Opera and the Orchestra della Toscana. Likewise, the Boston Globe recently praised baritone Philip Lima as a “commanding, intelligent stage presence,” with a “wide-ranging instrument of individual and beautiful timbre.” A frequent oratorio and concert soloist, Lima has appeared with the Eastern Music Festival in North Carolina, the Handel & Haydn Society, Boston Baroque and Harvard University’s Collegium Musicum, among others.

Single tickets for the RSO’s “German Requiem” are available now for $14, $26 or $34; student tickets (up to age 18) are $6. This concert is also available as part of “Compose Your Own Series” subscription. The “German Requiem” classics concert, part of the Conflux Design Classics Series, is sponsored by Bergstrom, Inc., and SupplyCore.
