Rockford Thunder soccer team in first place

The Thunder, Rockford’s indoor soccer team, sits alone in first place in the American Indoor Soccer League. They have won four of their five games this season. They were in a must-win match against the Massachusetts Twisters last Saturday night (Jan. 13) at the Indoor Sports Center in Loves Park. Both teams came in to the match with identical 3-1 records, and first-place on the line.

The two evenly-matched teams were tied at 7 with less than 2 minutes remaining in the game. The Thunder’s Roberto Gallo managed to score the game-winner at the 1:23 mark of the fourth quarter. Gallo’s heroic goal came on a power play. The goal was his second of the evening. Mike Rigas led the Thunder with four assists, including the pass to Gallo on the game-winner.

Making his Thunder debut as a starter in goal, Ante “Slash” Cop got the win. He stopped 10 of the 17 shots taken by the Twisters. Jeff Deren scored four goals for Massachusetts.

The Thunder will host the Cincinnati Excite Saturday, Jan. 20. Game time at the Indoor Sports Center is 7:30 p.m.
