Roger Powell Jr. to attend game watch, be honored at Lightning game

Roger Powell Jr., star forward on the 2004-05 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) men’s basketball team and current Rockford Lightning forward, will join the Rockford Area Illini Club (RAIC) for its game watch at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 19 at Old Chicago.

Two nights later, RAIC will honor Powell with lifetime membership to RAIC, as the Rockford Lightning celebrate Roger Powell Night at the MetroCentre. The Lightning tip off at 7:05 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 21 against the Gary Steelheads. The UIUC Illinettes cheer squad, sponsored by RAIC, will perform at halftime of the Lightning game. Powell was named to the 2005-06 CBA All-Star Game in his first season with the Lightning. The 6-foot, 6-inch forward from Joliet started all 39 games for the Fighting Illini during the 2004-05 season. He ranked No. 22 in the Big Ten in scoring and No. 11 in rebounding with 12.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Along with earning a degree in speech communications, Powell is also a licensed Pentecostal minister.

RAIC TV game watches are free and open to the public. Old Chicago, 6280 E. State St., is near Burlington Coat Factory and Dick’s Sporting Goods in Rockford, and boasts more than 75 seats in its smoking section and more than 130 seats in its non-smoking section. Those attending the game watch are encouraged to wear orange and blue.

In addition to the Sunday, Feb. 19, game watch vs. Indiana (13-8 overall, 5-5 Big Ten), RAIC plans to watch the No. 14 Fighting Illini (20-4, 6-4) vs. the No. 18 Iowa Hawkeyes (19-6, 8-3) at 5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 25, and at the No. 16 Michigan State Spartans (18-6, 6-4) at noon, Saturday, March 4.
