Romance novels topic of Sept. 21 event

Patricia Noel, romance writer, workshop instructor, and Rockford Writers’ Guild vice president, is back by invitation to present Romance Night for Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Rockford.

Her presentation, “Not Your Mother’s Romance Novel,” will be at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21. The presentation is free to attend.

Noel will discuss how the romance novel has evolved from the “bodice rippers” we all remember to become a powerhouse in the publishing industry. Fifty-five percent of all mass-market fiction is romance, and sales capture $1.2 billion each year. Explore with Noel the diverse sub-genres and the varying degrees of romance, from mild to hot.

Brief excerpts will be read, and Noel will provide tips and information about the major publishing houses releasing romance novels.
