RRVBC is urging community to donate blood prior to holiday weekend

Today the Rock River Valley Blood Center (RRVBC) is asking healthy individuals to make appointments to donate whole blood and platelets prior to the Labor Day weekend. Hospitals often experience high usage over holiday weekends. Platelets, used to stop bleeding and for cancer patients, last only five days. To best serve donors, the blood center is asking eligible donors to call to make appointments if possible—however, walk ins are always welcomed.

“Donors are always needed. The summer months, especially around the Labor Day holiday, are some of the most challenging times because of the increased need for blood due to increased summer activities and decreased donations due to donors leaving town for vacations. While we are not experiencing critical shortages, we are below what we would normally keep on hand in order to meet the emergency needs of our hospitals and their patients, especially as we start to build toward the long Labor Day weekend celebrations. Please remember to make donation part of your pre-vacation checklist,” said Linda Gerber, CEO.

RRVBC is the sole supplier of blood and related services to OSF Saint Anthony, Rockford Memorial, SwedishAmerican, Beloit Memorial, Edgerton Memorial Community, Freeport Health Network, Harvard Memorial, Northwest Suburban Community and Rochelle Community hospitals. Community-minded volunteers donate virtually all of this country’s supply of blood for transfusion.
