Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Kurt Elling joins his hometown orchestra for an evening filled with nostalgic jazz classics and popular songs at 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Coronado Theatre. Hailed by Dave Brubeck for his inventiveness, creative approach to song, and avant-garde musicality, Elling offers audiences a night to remember with premiere arrangements written especially for the Rockford Symphony Orchestra.
Now based out of Chicago, Ellings musical roots link back to his Rockfordian childhood. His father, a church musician, strongly encouraged his children with musical instruments and lessons.
I dont remember a time before singing, commented Elling. I am told I was making up parts and harmonies to the hymns in church, but this is probably apocryphal information. But music was always a joy to me, and I did it because it was natural and made me happy.
Tickets for the show range from $15 to $38 and are available by calling (815) 965-0049 or logging on to www.rockfordsymphony.com.
