RSO to hold Orchestral Showcase Concert

Music Director Steven Larsen is turning the spotlight on several of the Rockford Symphony Orchestra’s own talented members for the upcoming Classics Concert, “Orchestral Showcase,” at 8 p.m. on Feb. 23 at the Coronado Theatre. Giuseppe Torelli’s Sinfonia highlights trumpets, oboes and strings, while Alberto Ginastera’s Variaciones Concertantes alternately features cello, harp, flute, clarinet, viola, oboe, bassoons, trumpet, trombone, horns and strings in a series of 12 movements. The evening finishes with Igor Stravinsky’s remarkable suite from the ballet, Pulcinella.

“Of course, we love having talented guest artists perform with the RSO,” said Larsen. “But we often overlook the abundance of talent already in the orchestra. The pieces on the ‘Orchestral Showcase’ Program do just that—they showcase individual members of the RSO and give them the opportunity to break out of their sections and perform on their own. Our audience may be surprised by the virtuoso performances they will hear from some familiar faces.”

Tickets for the Rockford Symphony Orchestra’s “Orchestral Showcase” Classics Concert are available now. Single tickets are $14, $25 or $32; students (up to age 18) are $5. This performance, part of the Hamilton Sundstrand Classics Series, is sponsored by Bolender’s Jewelers.
