RVC celebrates Black History Month

Rock Valley College will celebrate Black History Month with a variety of events and activities all through February.

Activities at RVC are coordinated by the RVC Black Student Alliance and are partially underwritten with the support of the RVC Student Commission and the Rockford Public Library. For information, call RVC at (815) 921-4138. All events are free unless otherwise noted.

Mondays, Feb. 9, 16, 23–African and African-American History promotional giveaways, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Student Center.

Sunday, Feb. 8–Chicago cultural trip. Trip will include visits to the House of Blues Gospel Brunch and the DuSable Museum of African-American History. Cost, $40 per person, all inclusive. Bus leaves RVC at 9:30 a.m., returns approx. 5 p.m.; for reservations, call RVC Community Education at 921-3908.

Monday, Feb. 9–Tracing Your Roots, genealogical workshop. Presented by the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society—Northern Illinois Regional Chapter and the Rockford Public Library. Learn how to trace your family tree. Student Center, Room 1222, 6:30 to 10 p.m.

Thursday, Feb. 12–African Dance Company, Step Afrika. Step Afrika, a high-energy band of precision steppers, will perform. Step Afrika is a collaboration project between young artists from the U.S. and the South African-based Soweto Dance Compay. Noon to 1 p.m., RVC Performing Arts Room (lower level Educational Resources Center).

Thursday, Feb. 12–Poetry slam and open mic. This fun event includes prizes and food, sponsored by Rockford Public Library. Debra Jo Howard, slam conductor; Neal Howard, DJ; featured poets include Christopher Sims, Cullen Balch and Jeff Williams. 7 to 10 p.m. Woodward Technology Center (main RVC campus), rooms 117-121.

Monday, Feb. 18–Special Guest Lecture: Rae Lewis Thornton, an HIV/AIDS activist. 7 to 9 p.m., RVC Woodward Technology Center, rooms 117-121. Book signing to follow.

Tuesday, Feb. 24–Special Guest Lecture: Kevin Powell, an author, MTV Real World cast member and activist. 7 to 9 p.m. RVC Stenstrom Center for Career Education (next to Jefferson High School). Book signing to follow.
