Resale shop raises funds for disadvantaged youth

I know Comprehensive Community Solutions as the “Rockford On Board” people. Almost everyone who enters our office comments about the Monopoly-style game framed behind my desk. They created the game as part of a fund-raiser for their organization, and have plenty to sell at their new venture, the Salvage Too Resale Shop.

On South Main Street just past the railroad tracks, Salvage Too almost fills the warehouse space. They recently held a community garage sale day, opening their doors and grilling hot dogs for those who came to scan the merchandise. Outside sat bookshelves, antique sewing machines and a few pieces of exercise equipment.

The first floor covers home interiors and odds and ends. Antique pianos, in various states of repair, sold quickly, displayed next to range hoods and huge bookshelves. The interior puts antique malls to shame (or will, when they have the volume to compete). The staff arranged bedroom and living room groups, in addition to dining tables with dishware and other kitchen gadgets. Many of the desks and curio cabinets looked as though they needed some love, but the prices certainly appeared more reasonable than the antique malls I have visited.

If your office needs sprucing up on a budget, head upstairs, where you will find desks galore, filing cabinets, mail cubbys and cubicle walls. Having a banquet? How about a few dozen folding chairs? They offer a small selection of exercise equipment in a dark corner of the upstairs. I stopped to check out their toilets and bathroom fixtures since I’ve been renovating my basement. Some of their fixtures just need a good scrubbing, and one basin never made it out of the box!

The upper level of this former warehouse has lots of nooks and crannies. I found one room PACKED full of Christmas decorations, two others with computer equipment. On any vertical beam leaned dozens of doors—screen doors, metal doors, privacy doors and decorative doors. If your house needs a new entrance, you’re sure to find it here.

Salvage Too accepts donations of gently-used household items, as well as building materials. I plan to make a stop to donate what items I will not use… just as soon as I finish my basement!
