School Board extends superintendent’s contract

Rockford School Board members have approved a two-year extension of Dr. Dennis Thompson’s contract as superintendent of the city’s public schools.

The June 13 vote, which occurred at the School Board’s regularly scheduled meeting, continues terms of the employment agreement through June 30, 2009.

Board President Nancy Kalchbrenner said that under Thompson’s leadership, the public schools are showing gains on both the financial and student achievement fronts.

“The Board majority felt the schools and the community need, and deserve, the stability provided by a contract extension for Dr. Thompson,” Kalchbrenner said.

Kalchbrenner added, “The Board will continue to hold Dr. Thompson accountable for achieving the goals established for him by the Board in February of 2006, and will proceed with a process to evaluate Dr. Thompson and continue working with him to move the District forward.”

Kalchbrenner noted Thompson and the Board agreed to forgo a compensation increase on his $194,000 annual salary, a decision that reflects financial concerns that remain.

“The Board majority is pleased with Dr. Thompson’s performance and the direction the schools are heading, and we look forward to continuing the work needed to improve the performance of the public school system and all of its students,” Kalchbrenner said.
